Manousakis Winery
Looking for a Beautiful Winery in Crete and close to Chania City?
Well, Look no further!
Let me tell you about the Most Stunning one I've visited.
Manousakis Winery.
Located in the charming village of Vatolakkos, just a 20-25 minute drive from Chania City Center, Manousakis Winery offers a breathtaking journey through the Cretan Mountains. Nestled between the picturesque village of Omalos and the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), this family-owned organic winery is steeped in rich history.
Founded by Ted Manousakis in 1993, the winery is a story of returning to one's roots. Ted grew up in Vatolakkos but moved to the U.S. at a young age. Years later, he felt the pull to return to Crete and revive the island’s ancient winemaking traditions. This is where the name "Nostos" comes from, an ancient Greek word meaning "coming home," which perfectly captures the spirit of Manousakis Wines.
The story doesn’t end there. Fifteen years after Ted founded the winery, his youngest daughter Alexandra followed in his footsteps, moving from New York City to Crete to carry on the family legacy. Under her leadership, the winery has flourished, growing from producing 35,000 bottles a year to an impressive 150,000.
Manousakis Winery is more than just a place to taste exceptional wines. It’s a lively destination where you can immerse yourself in Cretan culture. From art exhibitions and music nights under the stars to weddings and private events, there’s always something special happening here. The winery’s restaurant offers a traditional Greek taverna experience, making it the perfect spot to enjoy the flavors of Crete.
